             abstract = "The purpose of this study was to assess the environmental 
                         vulnerability of the land in an area of influence of the upper 
                         course of the Rio Grande Watershed, mountainous region of the 
                         state of Rio de Janeiro. The methods involved the acquisition, 
                         conversion and storage of basic data in digital media, building a 
                         digital database, overlay of thematic maps in GIS environment, by 
                         assignment of values to each input variable, according to the 
                         importance in relation to environmental vulnerability. The final 
                         map, produced at 1:50,000, stratify the study area into 8 classes 
                         of environmental vulnerability, described as: Low, Low to 
                         Moderate, Moderate, High, high to very high, very high, very high 
                         to extremely high, and extremely high. The results contribute to 
                         the development of Geo-environmental mapping of the Serra do Mar 
                         landscape.",
